The
Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute
Campo della Salute, Venice
The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute - St Mary of Salvation
- is one of Venice's largest churches and also enjoys the
status of a minor basilica. Designed by Baldassare Longhena
at the end of the plague, it was finally completed in 1681.
Every
year, on 21 November, the city's officials travelled from
San Marco, crossing the Grand Canal, to the church for a service
of thanksgiving for deliverance from the plague. Known as
the Feast of the Presentation of the Virgin - the Festa della
Madonna della Salute, the festival is still a major event
in Venice today.
