San
Lorenzo Maggiore archaeological site
Via dei Tribunali 316, Naples, Italy
This is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary archaeological
sites in the whole Naples region. Beneath San Lorenzo, about
half of an original Roman market has been excavated. The site
has been open since 1992, the result of 25 years of painstaking
excavation.
The market
place is the only large-scale Greek-Roman site excavated in
the downtown area. Excavation work is still under way, but
what has been dug up so far are the streets of ancient Naples
as they were 2,000 years ago: complete with a butcher’s shop,
a dyer’s, a baker’s and a beautiful porticoed arcade.
